Technology News You Won’t Want to Miss
2022 has been a big year for virtual reality (VR). The Oculus Rift headset launched in early developer’s kit form, and HTC managed to make its Vivi VR system widely available technology news. Google’s Daydream VR viewfinder and accessories add further support for the industry standard. As with every other year, there have also been some negative developments. A number of companies have abandoned the market, others have pivoted away from head-mounted displays (HMDs) and augmented reality (AR) altogether. But it’s unlikely that we can say that 2016 was the end of VR. As VR continues to grow in popularity and adoption, it will only get better over the long term. Here are some of the most important tech news you won’t want to miss this year:
Oculus Rifts Launched in Early Development Kit Form
It’s no secret that the VR landscape is changing. In 2016, we saw the launch of the first consumer version of the Oculus Rift, which had been released in late 2015 as an open development kit. The Rift experienced a major price cut this year, and it’s now a more affordable, entry-level VR headset. At Sundance, VR company Ready at Sundown announced that they had sold over a million headsets since the launch of the Rift. It’s clear that VR is finding a home in more and more people’s bedrooms, and we can expect more announcements about more and more companies making VR available to more and more people.
Daydream View Headset Launched
One of the many announcements at Google’s VR event in January was the launch of the Daydream VR headset. The Daydream VR headset is essentially a high-quality, standalone VR system that is powered by a mobile device like a smartphone. Like the Oculus Rift, the Daydream VR headset is primarily a gaming headset, and it features a controller that allows users to play immersive games like a proper console controller. However, one of the biggest selling points of the Daydream VR headset is that it’s designed to be turned into a VR viewer by simply removing the head strap. This means that you can lean back in your sofa, put on your Daydream VR headset, and get your favorite VR game or TV show without having to take off the headset.
Sony and Project Morpheus Announced
In May, Sony announced its partnership with VR startup Morpheus to develop and release a consumer version of its Project Morpheus VR head-worn system. The project was first announced in 2014, and it’s still in development – that’s why we haven’t seen a consumer version of it yet. Project Morpheus is intended to be a mixed reality system that is used with VR headsets like the Oculus Rift. The main benefit of a mixed reality system like the Morpheus VR system is that the user can look around and interact with the real world as if they were really there.
We’ve already mentioned some of the promising features of the Morpheus VR system, but there are a lot of them. For example, the system’s camera is able to track the position of your eyes, so that you don’t have to look directly at the virtual world. Additionally, the Morpheus VR system is being developed with a focus on bringing virtual and reality together in one environment. This year, the project was able to bring two of its planned three VR platforms to market, and that’s a promising sign for the future of VR.

Google Cardboard Released as an Alternative to HMDs
In case you haven’t heard, the Google Cardboard platform is alive and well. In addition to the Google Cardboard system, Google also released an alternative to the standard HMD, known as the Daydream View headset. This headset sports a large collection of strap options to allow people to personalize the look and feel of the VR environment they choose to stand in. Cardboard is cheap, easy to make, and comes with a bunch of great features, but the Daydream View headset is a more premium option. It features a built-in camera, is designed to be more comfortable to wear, and comes with built-in controls, including a thumbstick and a rotary dial. For people who want complete control over their virtual reality environment, the Daydream View headset is a great option.
VR has been around for a long time, but it’s only in the last year or so that it’s begun to gain in popularity and adoption. As with any technology, the more people use it, the better. VR could be the technology that changes gaming forever, or it could be another tech that gains popularity but experiences low adoption. The key is to make it simple, easy to use, and enjoyable to use. That’s what we’re seeing with VR these days, and it will only continue to get better. With that in mind, here’s to a successful 2017 for VR.
